ART FOR “ART”

We have invited local artists to display their artwork at a special pre-show reception this weekend.

Read on for more information.

Mel Chadwick

An artist for more than fifty years, Mel Chadwick received his bachelor’s degree in oil painting with an emphasis in portraiture. Mel’s work as a cartoonist for various companies and corporations can be traced back to 1968, including 20 years drawing for the syndicated newspaper feature “Our Fascinating Earth.”

Robin Driscoll

Robin Driscoll Is an international award-winning published Photographer & Painter.

Robin originally studied Fine Arts at Cleveland institute of Art for several semesters. Financial challenges led to her looking for different ways to become a working photographer.

She enlisted and served as a US Navy Photographer (with specializations in Photojournalism & Multimedia Productions). She served in Sigonella, Sicily and Norfolk, VA. She met her husband Dennis, a Motion Picture photographer in Sicily.  When their service ended, they settled in Sandy Hook, CT before eventually relocating to California with their daughter.

She got a bachelor’s degree in business Admin. And went to Law School.  Three days before the bar exam she was in a serious car accident leaving her with a traumatic brain injury.

Her neuropsychologist used old learning (photography) as therapy.  Robin’s son had just started playing high school water polo.  The images from those games grew her photo skills. The neuroplasticity, and rebuilding of confidence was essential to deal with her disabilities. Organically the therapy assignments to shoot her son’s games turned into a 12-year business of shooting Action Sports, Triathlons & Events, Senior and Family Portraits.

Robin returned to painting after 35 not holding a paintbrush.  During Covid she discovered Alcohol Ink.  She used the shutdown to experiment with her fascination with the brilliance of the colors. She pushed to learn how to find techniques to make her paintings sing. Eventually she not only had a process that was her own, but the process made her happy. Even more exciting was seeing the reaction of people to her work.

Robin loves that she gets to share the Joy and passion of the vibrancy of Alcohol ink and how she sees the world- and then she gets to go back and find the gems and put them into a piece of jewelry for you to wear and share with the same awe and joy!

Roxanne Worley-Holm

I have always been drawn to puzzles, shapes and symbols. To me Mosaics represent those things. The ability to take broken tiles, glass and mirrors and make an art piece is fascinating. My husband likes when I use broken pieces and how quickly I can make them fit together. I get lost in the process.

Recently I started using small colored glass tiles. With these I can create more intricate designs. I see something in the world that inspires me. I wonder if I can recreate that image or can I stick tile on it and make it unique.

I have created custom pieces for friends and some of the requests have been very challenging. I am happy to say I have been successful in giving them what they were looking for.

Someday I would like to create a large piece in the community for many to enjoy. Possibly a community inspired piece that others can contribute to. I have no formal training and I am always learning. I do know what makes me happy.

Deb Madden

Deb Madden, IVRT supporter and sometimes performer, loves many art forms! Deb’s undergraduate degree was in Theatre Arts, but she was an elementary classroom teacher for 33 years, using art, theatre, and music to enhance all subjects. Upon retiring , Deb performed in local productions, pursued visual arts, and became a member of art associations, including Pomona Valley Art Association (PVAA) where her work can be seen at Gallery Soho in Claremont. Works include watercolors, acrylics, alcohol inks, and mosaics and range from realistic to abstract. Deb’s works are often described as emotional, bold, and colorful.

Kathleen McCall

Board member, Pomona Valley Art Association

Watercolor, Mixed Media, and 3-D

I discovered in childhood that art gave me a sense of expression, freedom, and permission to play “outside the box”. I always had art supplies, although I occasionally used found supplies. One of my early attempts at playing outside of the box was creating a colorful art piece for my grandmother: I painted her toilet seat with her finest nail polishes. It was my first negative critique.

I have had wonderful art teachers who encouraged me to be creative and expressive. I attended art classes taught by Andree Mahoney, Martha Underwood, Anthony Ivins, Aida Hughes, and Sylvia Megerdichian (Art Box). Recently I had a great fortune of attending a seven-day art workshop taught by award winning watercolorist Chris Van Winkle. Through all these wonderful artists and teachers and the friends with whom I share the passion of art, I have learned art can be a very powerful form of expression and joy.

I like experimenting with abstract shapes and color variations. I usually paint in water colors and add the fine details with pen and pencil to define what I see. My desire is to surprise and delight the viewer with unexpected color, shape, and detail. I like to go where my imagination takes me. I hope you enjoy it.

Much of my 3-D art is composed of recycled materials, old kitchen cabinets, discarded wire, torn up unsuccessful paintings off, are found in my art pieces. Currently I am constructing earrings. earrings from some of my less successful paintings. I enjoy repurposing objects and incorporating them into my art pieces. I have shown my artwork at the tag Gallery in Santa Monica, the dA Gallery, Gallery SoHo, and the Millard Sheets Gallery at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds. I received second place at the Pomona Valley Art Association’s 31st open juried art show (PVAA), and numerous awards at the PVAA themed monthly shows. It is so nice to get an occasional pat on the back.
